Dane Reynolds in New York: What a tease
Maybe he's just not that into us?
He says he wants to see us, but every time we try to make plans he gets 'injured' or just doesn't show up at all. Im beginning to think he's leading us on.
Here we are in week 37 without Dane Reynolds in our lives. After missing the first 5 events of the year due to knee surgery and some other stuff, he PROMISED us he would surf in the Quik Pro NYC. Promised.
Then a week ago, he belly-flopped on a juicy one and tweaked his ribs while on a trip to Japan that also left Yadin Nicol with a broken leg. He was hoping to surf if the comp was delayed a bit, but Hurricane Katia had other plans. Today he hopped into the commentary booth with snowboarder Todd Richards, to confirm our fears that we would not see him surf in NYC. Hawaiian Keanu Asing will take his spot in round 2.
If it's any consolation, Dane put up a new video on his blog, containing some pretty phenomenal summer highlights (frame-grab above), especially for someone who is too injured to put on a contest jersey.
And to add insult to injury to my attention span, two other Modern/Atlas stars have also fallen victim to the same southern hemi when it hit Tahiti. Dusty Payne tore his knee open during a freesurf, and Jordy Smith dislocated a rib during his heat with Travis Logie in round 3 of the Billabong Pro. (Side note: if you want to see a gnarly teahupoo reef cut photo from Keala Kennelly, click here.)
Competition will complete round 1 in building surf from the hurricane today. The winds have gone offshore, and every heat seems to get more swell, so pull up a chair.. Live here.
